Gift to the People
of Gibraltar
At the end of July five portraits commissioned by the Alwani
Trust were presented to the people of Gibraltar. The portraits
which show all five of Gibraltar’s Chief Ministers:
Sir Robert Peliza, Sir Joshua Hassan, Adolfo Canepa, Joe Bossano
and Peter Caruana; were painted by Gibraltar artist Ambrose
Avellano. The works were commissioned to celebrate the Tercentenary
of British Gibraltar and the 70th anniversary of the founding
of the Alwani Group. The Chairman of the Alwani Group and
the Alwani
Trust, Kishin Alwani, son of the group’s late founder,
felt it was opportune to realise a long-held wish to make
a personal contribution to the community. Ambrose Avellano
was recommended for the task, his brief being to represent
the Chief Ministers as they looked while in office.
We Need Homes...
Gibraltar Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
currently has an number of animals for re-homing. There is
a large fluffy Persian-type cat which would be ideal company
for a more mature person. There is a ginger medium size dog,
very nervous and shy, may take its time to become at home
— will need some TLC. Also a young black and white dog,
very friendly, small, well worth considering (see picture;
and a Pekenese cross, lovely little dog, quiet and friendly.
There are a number of puppies from 7 weeks to about 5 months.
Sadly there is also a quite mature greyhound, very friendly
has obviously had quite a hard time, is branded on the rear
flank.

Interview Room — Vital
Facility for the Community
Commander British Forces officially opened the new Pelham
House interview suite last month. Although the interview suite
is owned by the Joint Provost and Security Unit, it is a facility
for the whole of Gibraltar.
Any person in Gibraltar who is a victim of a serious crime
is able to use the flat. Pelham House has a child friendly
interview room to provide a more comfortable environment for
children who need to be interviewed about violent crime or
sexual abuse.
United Kingdom Law allows video-taped interviews to be submitted
as evidence. Such practice is used primarily for those deemed
“vulnerable” such as children and mentally handicapped
persons.
Although video-taped interviews cannot currently be used in
Gibraltar law courts, Pelham House also offers emergency accommodation
that can be used by an adult and up to two children immediately
after a violent crime. Warrant Officer Evans has been overseeing
the project for the last two years and explains its importance
to the local community: “It is very important for
a victim of violent crime to be able to feel safe and to return
to a home environment as quickly as possible. This flat enables
the victim to stay in one location and has the facilities
for medical examination, police interviews and emergency accommodation
if that is required.”
He goes on to say, “The refurbishment of this excellent
facility up to UK standards would not have been made possible
without the support from local businesses. Donations were
received from Mediterranean Computers, Image Graphics, Bassadone
Motors, The Vienna Bedding Shop, SM Seruya and SSAFA Forces
Welfare Committee as well as several private donations.”
