NATIONAL DAY 2005
With the wide variety of fun events planned in the lead up
to National Day (10th
September) there promises to be something for everyone to
enjoy. Commenting on the programme of events, Culture Minister
Fabian Vinet said: “As I have already revealed,
music will this year play a particularly pivotal role in the
events leading up to and including National Day.
Government had already announced details of the concert by
Taxi and Milbajac taking place at Casemates Square on Thursday
8th September. It is now my pleasure to announce that Breed
77 will be performing at the Commonwealth Parade Marquee on
Saturday 3rd September as part of the National Week festivities. This
concert is privately organised but has been facilitated by
the Ministry, having been in discussions with the promoter
to help deliver a quality concert that in my opinion will
be well received by the many fans of Breed 77. “The
band, which specialises in a unique blend of Hard Rock with
North African and Spanish influences and last year performed
throughout Europe as well as in the United States and Australia,
is made up of Stuart Cavilla, Peter Chichon, Danny Felice,
Paul Isola and Pedro Caparros.
They will be performing songs from their two albums, namely
the recently reissued self-titled debut and the more recent
“Cultura”. “Breed 77 are currently recording
their third album and the band will be temporarily halting
the recording process specifically to perform on the Rock.
I have spoken to the band and they have made clear their eagerness
to perform on the Rock — their concert promises to be
a special occasion that is not to be missed. “I
am happy to reveal that Seven Sins, who command a loyal local
following, will be the support act.
“As far as the National Day Rock Concert is concerned,
we have not wanted to deviate too much from the suc cessful
format of past years, although on this occasion more prominence
will be given to younger musicians while still ensuring that
the repertoire will appeal to all ages.
“An innovation this year will be that, given the renaissance
that Jazz has been experiencing in Gibraltar over recent months,
the Rock concert itself which commences at 10pm will be preceded
by two hours of live Jazz, starting at 8pm. “The full line-up for the Rock concert is
presently being finalised but will include popular local acts
like Blackout, Decorum and Adrian Pisarello. “Of
course, lovers of Classical Music will also be well catered
for and can look forward to the now traditional Classical
Concert at St Michael’s Cave on Sunday 4th September.
Arranged for Government by the Gibraltar Philharmonic Society,
the concert will feature an attractive repertoire performed
by the South London Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton
of Karel Mark Chichon. “Finally, all of the
traditional events of National Day will be happening, including
the Children’s Fancy Dress Competition, Youth Disco,
Fun Day for children and fireworks display, as well as Holy
Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe. “Elderly
citizens will this year be able to enjoy more seating at Casemates
Square to be able to more comfortably enjoy the political
rally and the dancing and other entertainment taking place
that morning. “All in all, I think we have
managed to organise or at least facilitate an extremely wide-ranging
series of concerts and other events that will ensure an enjoyable
National Week and National Day.” |
